...walk out, drive to a car dealership, ask for a free truck and get it? Because that’s what I did today.
Back story:
A couple nights back I asked oppo for some help. I was in need of guidance about towing a heavy trailer and the risks involved (thanks LooseonExit). I got some great feedback, and a couple of options to pursue.
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
Today I took those options to my studio, so that we could discuss how we wanted to move forward. I explained that we couldn’t tow the trailer with a motor pool 1/2 ton pickup because: A) it was way over capacity, and B) the trailer we need is a goose neck and a 1500 obviously doesn’t have a 5th wheel hitch. Then I laid out our options:
1) Rent a box truck from Budget and forget the trailer. It’ll cost about $700 (suggested by Dusty Ventures and Snuze: The New Slobalt)
2) We didn’t get to option 2 because the girl in charge of the budget yelled “We’re not renting a truck! You’re not getting any money!” and walked away. I followed her over to her desk and tried to explain the situation, only to be cut off, ignored, and yelled at. My buddy walked away, because he was about ready to knock her out.
Realizing that this course of action was futile, I grabbed that guy and another studio friend and said “Lets go to (insert car dealership name here)“. They said sure and we collectively stormed out. The group of us jumped in my buddy’s Charger and drove to the closest dealership (a used car lot) in the chain.
Upon getting out of the car we were ambushed by a salesman. He greeted us and asked what he could do/what we were looking for. I said we were students from the Design+Make studio and asked if he had any 3/4 or 1 ton trucks. “Of course we do” he exclaimed happily “what’s your budget?”
I laughed nervously “That’s the thing... we don’t really have a budget”.
I then explained our situation, the project, and that we could only really offer him marketing and that we’d allow ourselves to be used in their marketing. To my surprise he said that was something that they’d be very interested in. He said that while he couldn’t officially say yes, they could probably help. He called the main store and set up a meeting for us this Friday with the General Manager.
So, although nothing is official yet, I’m tentatively excited about today’s achievement. I’m currently putting together a marketing/information package to take with me on Friday, hopefully it goes well.

Just a heads up: You might want to check what University policy on this sort of thing is. Y’all probably have sufficient flexibility to do this kind of sponsorship thing, but Universities can be...special places. Glad to hear things may be working out for ya, though! Good work!
Edit: It also might help your next conversation with your budget person to have some sort of note from the motorpool folks about the limitations of the Uni vehicles.

I thought about that too, so it’s something we’re working on for the package for Friday. Our marketing people are talking to the college admins about restrictions/issues that could arise with the University.

you said gooseneck and 5th wheel in same sentance. They are two different ways of pulling trailers. 5ht wheel is for travel trailers and gooseneck is for heavy duty trailers like construction or dump ones

should have gone to the head of your uni and see if you could get the money from him/her directly (assuming the lady who ranted NO wasn't the head honcho)

You can typically handle these things by replacing the budget person’s computer with a large block of cheese.

That lady sounds like a flaming cunt lol. I recall for my senior design project we were doing the Formula SAE heavy lift cargo plane competition. Basically we were never given a budget limit for buying stuff and really anything we came up with that could be justified with some calculations was allowed. Kinda weird to be able to just order whatever parts we needed. Now the ordering process though was the worst! It took nearly a month from when we placed orders to when we would have the item, even if I could have ordered it myself and had it in a few days. But anyways, yeah definitely go above her! Universities have more than enough money. Make sure to tell them using the current truck would be a liability and of course that is more expensive than renting.

Definitely explain that the motor pool that I assume is supposed to be a resource for your studio needs a boost. You might find some budget there if they object to the marketing thing.
Which, BTW, was an awesome get.

Our money doesn’t come from the university. We have an actual client who we’re working with, providing design and labor for free in order to make the clients budget go way further. Our budget person is a fellow studio member.

Cool. Glad you’re taking a smart and safer path forward.
Your lady friend seems like a nice person...willing to let you get maimed, die, or potentially allow that to happen to some other innocent person over a few hundred dollars. High fives for that. That takes a special kind of person right there. Whatever her ties to KSU (if any), I’m sure they’d love to hear about that.
Anyhow, hope you get it all worked out and get your materials delivered safely.

She definitely has a future as an accountant for pre-bailout GM. She’s a fellow studio member, so she’ll have to eventually face peer review... and she’s pissed off a lot of the studio already.
